Teenage Dirtbag 'How are young people presented in contemporary media?' #3

Teenage Dirtbag - Music Video
The song is about a young man who doesn't feel important in school until he meets a girl.

  • The lyrics 'she/he doesn't give a damn about me' portrays how school cliques are a very important thing. If you're not in the right clique then you don't matter to the rest of the school. If you're unpopular then you are unnoticed.
  • The camera gets close and then widens showing his struggle to get down the stairs (0:52) this suggests that no matter where he is in school nobody is bothered about who he is or how is. I believe that this is a false representation of young people.
  • There is a wide shot (1:42) showing him lying on the floor with nobody helping or even looking at him, this shows how important the cliques are throughout teenage life, i think this shows how bad some things are for young people.
  • 2:56 to 3:15 the shot flips between two people at prom, focusing on only them by blurring out everyone else out possibly meaning that when young people have their mind set on something then nothing else matters especially when it comes down to their relationships as nothing seems more important.

LOL - Movie Trailer
This film is about the typical life of a teenage girl and how she copes with her social, romantic and home life.

  • The beginning of the trailer shows the school from different angles all very fast paced, and busy, possibly representing the never ending pace of a young persons life. On the other hand it could possibly show that school is not important to some people therefore it is seen but rushed past, almost as if it has to be there like it is in young peoples lives.
  • At 0:20 you see three friends, this scene is in slow motion and nobody else is seen so this suggests that friends are a big part, if not the most important, in a teenagers life and no matter how busy their lives are they always make time for each other.
  • The music changes throughout the the movie trailer several times but it is never slow or quiet which could mean that there is never a dull moment in their lives or that no matter how bad they think their life is there is always something 'upbeat' and good to look for.
  • There is quite a lot of text seen throughout the trailer which all changes quite quickly this could suggest how young people change their minds and feelings easy, an example of this is when her 'status' changes from 'boyfriend' to 'ex-boyfriend' then to 'new boyfriend??'
  • Throughout the trailer there are many different scenes ranging from kisses, tears, laughs and drama all fast paced which shows the fast moving, busy, hectic and very emotional lives of young people.

American Pie 'How are young people presented in contemporary media' #1

American Pie - Trailer
This film is about the life of a group of young people during their time at high school, showing their love life, social life and friendship.

  • The first camera shot focuses on the main characters face, this suggests that it is a personal moment but when his parents walk in (0:16) the camera angle widens so that all three are on screen (0:22) this gives the impression that he has no privacy and it shows an invasion of space.
  • In the next scene (0:31) two girls are seen talking about losing their virginity and how they want to get it over with. I believe that this gives the impression that teenagers are not bothered about their virginity and sex is just something they want to get done, this is a false representation of teenagers.
  • At 1:10 the camera flips between different groups of people suggesting that nothing is private and that things aren't always kept between who you think.
  • The music during the trailer changes several times fitting what is happening on screen. The upbeat songs show the wild, fun, free side of teenagers where as the slower songs are playing during the awkward, romantic or disappointing scenes.
  • At the end of the trailer there are several scenes throughout the movie shown, each a few seconds long, suggesting how fast young peoples life is, which both good times and bad.
